Participatory mapping is the creation of maps by local communities. It relies on the knowledge and awareness of community members of their environments. This process is generally done with the support of organizations like governments (at various levels), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), universities, and others engaged in the development and land-related planning sectors. The mapping process emphasizes community members to create the maps themselves. This collaborative process provides greater community cohesion, stimulates community participation in land-related decision-making, raises awareness about land-related issues, and ultimately empowers local communities and their members.
